The closing of a ceramic dynasty

I got word last week that the Ceramics programme at Central Tech High School in Toronto is closing after over a 50+ year history as one of the leading spawning grounds for potters in this province. We can all thank Dug Ford for the abolition of art, music and libraries in this province. He is our wannabe Donald Trump who is the Conservative leader of our province.
Central Tech had teaching by Robin Hopper, Judi Dyelle, Roger Kerslake and countless other big names. Students include Tim de Rose, Kayo O Young and a long list of gooduns.
It's easy to sit here and say so what can I do? Well, you can protest. I don't normally use my blog as a political statement but this dude has put drinking cheap beer ahead of most of what I believe in- art, music, and books. Trouble is the numb skulls that drink cheap beer don't  go to libraries and art galleries.
They do go to music concerts but I doubt it is anywhere where words are part of the program.
Maybe that's not fair. I'm pissed and I'm taking shots.
I am sporting this badge in a very Conservative town. Maybe one person will change- dunno!!
Who needs libraries, anyway?

Stop Ford

Fickle finger of fate

It always get me when bosses urge their employees to think out side the box, when the art programs that are the training spaces for outside thinking are the first to be squashed!

Not only is the ceramics program gone, but an adult art program that is over 90 years old was also cancelled, and if you check out your Canadian art history, you'll find out how many famous Canadian artists got their art education at Central Tech.

There was a golden age of ceramics education at Central Technical School in Toronto, but for the past decade or more the level of ceramic education at Central Tech has been sub-standard at best.

Don't forget Bobs Cogill Haworth she taught ceramics at Central Tech from 1929 to 1963, and she studied ceramics at the Royal College of Art in London. At one time Central Technical School rivalled the Ontario College of Art in art education.

Wow, Anonymous, thanks for that kick in the teeth start my day. As the main ceramics teacher at Tech for r he last 12 years, that's hard to hear. Yes things have changed. The adult art program has deteriorated from a three-year scaffolded program which included hand building, throwing, and glaze technology to a one-semester drop-in program. In an 18-week program, with 7.5 hours per week instruction, I'd love to see what you could do with students of all levels of experience in this scenario. I was educated by Walter Ostrom, among others, at NSCAD, so my instruction, while I'm a stickler for the technical, is more conceptual. I get why the work being produced might not meet the standards of the Leech-style Potters of Central Tech's past. That's ok.
I do want to tell you, Tony, that Doug Ford isn't the one behind this, though his class-average increase hasn't helped. The story here is about declining enrolment due to a bad reputation. When I started here in 2007, there were fourteen teachers in the art department. Now there are two. TWO. The high school program had three grade nine , two gr 10, one gr eleven and one gr twelve classes plus a one-semester portfolio program. We are now down to one grade nine class and one combined 10-11-12 class. If the students aren't here, it doesn't matter how great your teaching staff or program or facilities are... The historic Art Centre at CTS is in real jeopardy. It has been heartbreaking to be here and work so hard to keep up with what Robin Hopper called "administrivia" - the reason, he tells me, that he left the school system to teach elsewhere. It's a tough go working within the tdsb.
I would just say, Anonymous, I don't know if you are a former student at the school or an observer or what, but I think if you're going to critique, attach your name to your comment. And be mindful of how powerful (and devastating) your words - especially online - can be. For a teacher to hear that their program is considered sub-par after over a decade of tireless effort to keep it afloat, well, you can imagine, is pretty shitty.
Thanks for the post, Tony! The ceramics studio isn't going anywhere, the department will still continue to operate - differently of course, under Continuing Education. Stay tuned...

Restructuring an institution like and art department can be painful, especially while the administration has to clear out the dead wood.

There are three community colleges in Toronto: Centennial College, George Brown College and Seneca College that all offer a variety of arts programming, and their facilities can't even compare to the Art Centre at Central Technical School. But what are great facilities when you don't have great teachers in those studios?
Anonymous said…
Of course the Art Centre at Central Tech has gained a bad reputation over the past few years, because it became a nest of lazy and useless teachers, resulting in dropping enrollment as students and their families chose not to attend.
Anonymous said…
I have mixed feelings about the 3 years that I spent at the Art Centre, 3 of the teachers were respectful of their students and had welcoming classrooms, 4 other teachers were just nasty and abusive.
Anonymous said…
So sad that the end is near, a rich history in ceramic and art education is over, but in recent times it just hasn't lived up to its potential.
Anonymous said…
At one time the Art Centre at Central Tech had a great reputation, graduates were given advanced standing to upper years of study at art colleges like OCAD, now days graduates are told to apply to foundation studies at colleges to get up to an acceptable level to apply to programs of their choice. Sad, just sad, the current state of art education at Central Tech.

The Toronto District School Board and Central Technical School administration have certainly dropped the ball in their failure to provide excellence in art education, shame on them!
Anonymous said…
It's all part of the educational pyramid scheme.
Why prepare students for jobs when graduating from high school, when you can get them into college and university for a BA, get no job and tell them they need a MA, still no job so they better get a Phd.

Toronto students could use a lesson from their French counterparts, when French students protest, the government always listens to them. So Central Tech students take on Doug Ford and the Ontario government, the Ministry of Education, the Toronto District School Board, and the school administration at Central Technical School and get your art programming back!

Anything 4 sale?
If they are closing the ceramics studio at Central Tech, is any of the studio equipment like wheels and kilns for sale. I'm sure interested in buying some used equipment.

The Toronto District School Board like all slum landlords operate rundown and deteriorating schools, these facilities are disgusting, go into the Art Centre at Central Tech, and you'd think that you were in a third world country school.

Sounds like a renoviction, let the place go to rot, and empty it out, then try and find a buyer.

Isn't it a heritage building?
Don't they have to maintain it?

Well we now know why Doug Ford and his finance minister crony is cutting funding for education and health care, they have to find money for the millions and possible billion dollars it will cost Ontario taxpayers to cancel a contract with the Beer Store, and get beer into corner stores. What moron thinks this is a good idea, and a good use of public money?
Anonymous said…
Typical conservative party, they don't understand the creative mind and the arts, so they try to stamp it out. Not realizing how important it is in the economy, how many people are employed in arts related jobs. These people are so short sighted, and are not investing in the future.
Anonymous said…
Toronto has Rosedale Heights School of the Arts and Etobicoke School of the Arts, interesting how an arts education is only available to upper/middle class white rich and privileged people. When I went to the Art Centre we didn't even have heat in the winter, we wore our coats, hats and gloves to class. And then when it rained, buckets and bowls all around the classrooms to catch the downpour of drips. And don't get me started on the washrooms, most gas stations have better and cleaner washrooms that the one's the students got to use at the Art Centre at Central Tech.

Central Tech art programs have been on life support for almost 40 years now, due to budget cuts and reduced funding, and mismanagement by the Toronto School Board and especially the administration at Central Tech. No wonder parts of the program like ceramics and the adult art program have finally been cancelled.
Anonymous said…
When is the last time they had any great artist/teachers at Central Technical School in Toronto? It has been ages, the late 60's and early 70's.
Anonymous said…
Real art education?

It was announced that the art education at Central Tech will be handed over to TDSB continuing education department. Is that real arts education or just recreation and leisure? Continuind ed, better known as old white woman art school classes.
Anonymous said…
Art students out, old paperwork in!
Some of the art studios at Central Tech are being used to hold file cabinets of old memo and other bits of paperwork waiting for the paper shredder, or what the TDSB and Central Tech admin are calling the TDSB's new archive. What a great use of art studios, couldn't they just rent a storage unit to store their old junk in?
Anonymous said…
Regarding the adult art program, its cancellation is simply age discrimination. Passing adults students off to the fluff offered through continuing ed is just discrimination by not offering adults access to real art education. Shame on you TDSB and Central Tech admin.
Anonymous said…
The ceramics program was doomed about 3 years ago when they retired their full-time ceramics technician, and allowed under-qualified part-timers from the continuing ed dept. to take over for the night school classes. There is just bad management at this school.

Arts education should be a right, not just an option for the privilaged few, fill the art studios at Central Tech with teachers, and not as a dumping ground for old storage items.

The ceramics program is not the only thing under threat, they are planning on getting rid of the sculpture technician too. And for most of the past decade there has been a revolving door of teachers who knew nothing about sculpture at Central Tech. What does that tell you about the school's commitment to its arts program.
Anonymous said…
So sad to see the slow death of an iconic art institution, just goes to show you what mismanagement of the art dept. at Central Tech has caused.
Anonymous said…
If it wasn't for Adam Brockie the sculpture technician, the sculpture program at Central Tech would have ended almost a decade ago, after a string of useless teachers were assigned to take over teaching the subject. No thought given to what is best for the students, total mismanagement of an art education by school administration at Central Tech.

Just think of the amazing abstract painters that came out of Central Technical School, from Painters Eleven Kazuo Nakamura and Tom Hodgson. Also the renown artist Harold Klunder.
Nakamura travelled all the way from British Columbia, and Klunder from Hamilton, Ontario to study at Central Technical School in Toronto. The school's prestigious reputation as a place for artists to gain a good art education has certainly been lost over time.

What an amazing high school art program including access to special build studios for ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and of course drawing and painting. It's a real shame that access to art classes in this amazing art building has been curtailed by the TDSB and school administrators.

Remember that tag team of Dori Vanderheyden and Erin Vincent, curriculum head and her assistant, Vanderheyden gave assignments where she didn't have to teach anything, and Vincent was always so prickly and uptight she made classes so miserable. Art Centre
The Art Centre at Central Technical School has been a silent success for over seventy-five years. Discovered by most through word of mouth and referral, it is home to almost sixty courses in the visual arts. Fifteen specialized studios and a large teaching staff, combined with a talented student body, foster a dynamic sharing environment. The curriculum stresses drawing and design for a sound foundation. Courses include ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, life drawing, digital media and communications.

What's the word of mouth about the ceramics education at Central Tech?

Crappy and useless comes to mind!

Another art school bites the dust.

walking the halls of this place is so creepy, when you see the art teachers it's like a scene from the walking dead.

No use finger pointing, there are a lot of players involved, and a lot of behind the scenes decisions made in the past that have effected the future of art programs at Central Tech.
Short sighted as they may be, and lots of blame to spread around. Interesting to note that creative industries are expanding in the economic and job markets, that new programs in the creative sector are being launched at community colleges all the time, but the province can't come up with the funding for one high school art education program? Something really smells rotten about what they did at Central Tech.

Who's fooling who? There may have been hard working dedicated teachers in the past at central tech, but the one's I had did the least amount of effort they could in teaching their art classes. No wonder enrollment in their art classes was so low. I guess Central Tech and the TDSB expects that passes as teaching these days.

Former student in the Adult Art Program.

If you studied art at Central Tech, and applied to a college program of your choice, but were denied acceptance based on the low standard of art education at Central Tech, and the college or university recommended you take a foundation art program. You should be compensated for the extra expense you incurred by the TDSB. It's there responsibility to ensure that you've received a standard of education that is acceptable.

Thank you to all the amazing high school teachers out there, who make the high school experience something special and full of memories of the time we were there.

If you were going to have a "tuesdays with morrie" or a "five people you meet in heaven" moment, which Art teachers from Central Technical School living or dead would you want to meet again?

There used to be a bad smell around the sculpture room like a blocked sewer pipe, turns out that was just the stench left by Erin Vincent, totally unsuitable as a teacher, hope she is never allowed to teach in a public school again.

May be Doug Ford can turn it into a casino and amusement park, he's been trying to get one into downtown Toronto for years, and it hasn't happened yet? It's a grey and gloomy building, it would be the perfect place to loose more money and give it all to Ford's government. Central Tech Casino, has a nice ring to it don't you think.

A Thank you to all the artists, teachers, technicians, students and volunteers who've passed through the doors of Central Tech over the years, and filled the studios with their dedication and inspiration to create art and craft, and be part of a creative community, the lessons learned and passed on, the inspiration provided, and the friendships and memories that live on.

It's hard to feel sorry for an organization and teachers that treated a group of students like shit and felt they didn't have to do there jobs, you may not be teaching art, but because of unions you still have your jobs. I guess you got some karma after all.

When I was an art student at Central Tech two of my teachers were always MIA (Missing in Action), they would disappear at the beginning of class and return only when the class was ending, gods knows what they were doing but it wasn't teaching. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to claim I am a self taught artist.

Art education at Central Tech was a joke, first day of classes in September the classes were always full to capacity with eager and excited art students, by the end of the first week 70% of the students had dropped out of art classes, because the couldn't stand the teachers and how they treated their students. It's so true this place became a nest for the laziest, rudest, and completely incompetent teachers in The Toronto District School Board. No wonder its finally closed down.

The art program at Central Technical School lived long past its relevance, it was often advertised as following a Bauhaus principle of the artist/teacher, but was slowly taken over by art wannabes and posers, career teachers, teachers who were qualified to teach any subject, AKA glorified room monitors and attendance takers, and handing out assignments and grading, instead of what should have been occuring in those studios real art instruction and education.

The Art Centre at Central Technical School, now the building of broken dreams. How so many people have mismanaged this place and driven it into the ground.
Anonymous said…
An inner city high school filled with students from working class families don't deserve to have an arts program that would allow them to enter college and university programs for the growing developmemt of careers in art and design, that is only for the rich upper class white students that attend Rosedale and Etobicoke School of the Arts. Lets face it they belong in the Service Industry and other minimum wage jobs.

The Art Centre at Central Technical School is chronically under-attended and under-utilized, what caused this situation, could it be chronic budget cuts, an ambivalent attitude may be even a sense of hostility directed at this program and its students, so who bears responsibility for the mismanagement of this superb art facility?

I don’t think we’ll get rid of schools any time soon, certainly not in my lifetime, but if we’re going to change what’s rapidly becoming a disaster of ignorance, we need to realize that the institution “schools” very well, but it does not “educate”; that’s inherent in the design of the thing. It’s not the fault of bad teachers or too little money spent. It’s just impossible for education and schooling to be the same thing.

"The CTS Art Department was the first art school in the Toronto Public School System. Central Technical School gained the recognition of providing superior art training and producing a roster of some of the most illustrious artistic talents in Canada."

That was then, and this is now.

So who fucked it up?

"Mike Harris and his pals formed a neo-conservative government in
Ontario for far too many years. One of the things they did to save
money was to cut the art programs out of all of the grade schools. Their
attitude was that if kids needed art lessons, their parents should pay for
them. So the rich kids got lessons, and the rest did not. Art is such an
easy target for politicians. In a not so funny way, politicians and short
sighted go hand in hand."

Quote from Harlan House

Same old, same old, things never change with politicians, they've done it again, screwed an inner city school out of having a great art program. Poor kids don't need an art education to get careers in the rapidly developing art and design industries, they just need educating so they can get low paying service industry jobs.

The demise of art education at Central Tech highlights the problem of how art education is delivered in high schools. When the current crop of art educators are merely glorified room monitors and not the artist/educators of past eras. As stated by the TDSB philosophy that a teacher can teach any subject. That is the most ridiculous piece of bullshit that I've ever heard. Especially when they promoted the Art Centre at Central Tech as being influenced by Bauhaus principles and offering a specialized art program.

They ceramic classes here were a joke, and Central Tech and the TDSB should be ashamed and offer an apology to the students who wasted their time and money taking art classes at this school.

After CTS I started a picture framing business in Yorkville Ave. and from there I got married had two children and moved to England and started picture framing again and at age 78 I'm still doing it, not for the money but because it's something I enjoy.

I'm Bob Hamon and if anybody remembers me please contact me via e-mail address of

The world has changed so much in the past 6 months, I don't think funding will ever be restored to provide great ceramics and art education at Central Technical School.

I laughed, I recently read someone's blog, when they were a student there in 2007 - 2010,
the blog was from 2007, they had to go to admin and ask for disinfectant for the washrooms in the art building because they were a breeding ground of disease and germs. That place was really digusting, they never kept it clean. I wonder how they plan to operate that place in the day and age of Covid-19?
