I'm a lazy bugger

It is true that if you leave a crackle slip hanging around too long it loses it's crack. Dan Finnegan explained at the North Carolina Potters Conference that he makes a new batch to add to what's left of his old batch. Dan has got crack down! Dan has made a living as one of the best crack dealers in the land.
Me, I hate making glazes and I hate small buckets of glaze. I am a garbage pail man. I use two or three glazes and I make them in garbage pails. That usually requires 30,000 grams. It means I can dip big pots and dip bowls and plates without splashing glaze all over the place. I have a garbage pail of crack, a garbage pail of Aussie shino and a garbage pail of Malcolm Davis Shino.  Small pails of accent glazes.
“I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”

It’s a great quote, that came from Frank B. Gilbreth Sr. He studied the best and poorest bricklayers and stumbled on an astonishing fact; he could learn the most from the lazy man!  He noticed lazy workers eliminated unnecessary movement and reduced fatigue. He also discovered that expert workers were the most wasteful of their motion and strength.  They had the ability to produce a large quantity of good work, but they tired themselves out of all proportion to the amount of work they accomplished.

So here is the secret to keeping your crack alive. I dip the pot in crack, give it a little shake  and then immediately pour or dip it into the Aussie shino. Remember the shino first or be cursed rule. It makes the glaze underneath crack. This is how you break a rule to solve a problem. Aussie Shino 70 Nepheline Syenite 30 EPK. or for a bit shinier 80 Nepheline Syenite 20 EPK. Bruce's Crack and Malcolm Davis Shino are both in John Britts High Fire Glaze book which is my Bible. Here's some pots to look at. The plate had crack poured on it, a shake and then Aussie shino poured on. This is the best case scenario for this method of reviving your crack.

If you let the crack dry and then pour the Aussie shino on you get the these little pot holes that I quite like and the glaze cracks. I used to stir my shino like a crazy man to get the bubbles on top of the glaze so they showed up on my pot. If you look at the close up you will see how the crack didn't crack too much until I poured the Aussie shino on.

Ever since Grade school when someone told me you can''t do that I wanted to do it even more. Shino first or be cursed unless of course you are me.

I am listening to the new CD of Rufus Wainwright "Unfollow the rules".

I know what you mean, I don't know how many times as a child I was called a little bugger or a little sod, for some naughty mischief I had gotten myself into. Apparently they are terms you can't use any more, political correctness and all that stuff.

The Peaceful Transfer of Power is the Cornerstone of Our Democracy. Without it, there is no United States of America. On July 19, 2020, for the first time in our history, a United States President has declared publicly that he will not absolutely abide by this time-honored tradition, the only thing that has ever set us apart from other countries.

Personal fart power - is it viable?

Have you ever wondered if you could use human produced gas to fire your kiln?

Women will be reassured to know that they are equal to men in the production of fart gas. Both produce an average of approximately 700 milliliters every day.

People also fart more during the day than at night, though fart gas production does continue while you sleep.

It’s probably a good thing that that people fart less in their sleep. Just imagine how bad it would be if they farted more in their repose: surely it would be grounds for divorce. Married couples could also suffer from a form of fart apnea because almost everyone stops breathing after a fart, including one’s spouse.

Now, how about the potential for using farts as fuel? You can get 1.420E+5 Joules per mole of H2 burned in O2, so the 0.000335 moles of hydrogen gas in a fart will yield 47.57 J. You can get 8.904E+5 Joules per mole of CH4 burned in O2, so the 0.000112 moles of methane will give us 99.72 J. The combined combustion potential energy of a fart is, therefore, 147.29 Joules. It would keep a 60-watt light bulb lit for one seconds, if the efficiency of conversion of chemical energy to electricity were 40.7%.

With this assumed conversion efficiency, it would require the farts of 6171 average people to keep a single 60-watt light bulb lit all the time. If a hundred million people were harnessed for 'round-the-clock extraction of fart gas, the "harvest" would supply about one continuous megawatt.

A Prayer to Combat the Coronavirus Pandemic*
Most Merciful and Triune God,
We come to You in our weakness.
We come to You in our fear.
We come to You with trust.
For You alone are our hope.

We place before You the disease present in our world,
and the evil and lies of our President Donald Trump.
We turn to You in our time of need.

Bring wisdom to doctors.
Give understanding to scientists.
Endow caregivers with compassion and generosity.
Bring wisdom to Republican politicians, and bring them back to serving the people
and no longer only concerned with serving their own self interests.
Bring healing to those who are ill.
Protect those who are most at risk.
Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one.
Welcome those who have died into Your Eternal Home.

Stabilize our communities.
Unite us in our compassion.
Remove all fear from our hearts.
Fill us with confidence in Your care.

(mention your particular concerns and prayers now)

Jesus, I trust in You.
Jesus, I trust in You.
Jesus, I trust in You.

Amen.

Stupid question here...what makes the dots on the last photo? Is that intentional texturing? I wonder because I occasionally get pin holes and can it be avoided before firing? Thx, JLK
Anonymous said…
Some glazes like to be massaged, if you gently rub the glaze with your finger tips you can get rid of those pinholes if you don't want them to appear on the final piece.
Anonymous said…
It could all be just a matter of timing in your firing schedule, don't be in a rush, Giving the gases more time to escape by slower firing or Giving the glaze time to heal by soaking or slower cooling will decrease the chances of pin holing.
Anonymous said…
It could be the glaze you are using needs adjusting,

A pinhole marring a fired glaze is possibly the most troublesome of all glaze faults, disrupting an otherwise smooth surface. Slow firing at peak temperature helps heal pinholes, but preventing them in the first place is the holy grail of a smooth glaze.

JLK : Jennie. It is the late dip of the crack into Aussie shino. If I do it quickly no pinholes. I think if you rub your stones after your glaze them you will eliminate the pinholes. Also a long soak at peak temp helps.

Dear Fart Scientist: are there other body “explosions” that happen in the night that we can convert? Some people snore, that must be A great amount of joules that could be converted if there was sufficient energy into the snores. Then what about the energy that we get out from negativity, can that be converted into energy? We all let ourselves go into a lot of negative thoughts and time and shit about other people, can that convert?

I wonder why we are so self centered that we allow the very best In life we could have ever had to escape? Maybe we all are the biggest assholes imaginable. Why are we so selfish and unwilling to compromise, just to be right and then lose it on perhaps the best thing that could ever have happened? Life is so fragile and if you have even the remotest chance , pay attention. Or grow old alone thinking your friends will take care of you- sure they are there now, do they have partners they care about? Of course..!lucky you if your kids will take care of you, or you can Iive alone because your vanity is too great,. Are you that vain!? If love wants to grab you, grab back and make it happen. It takes a little work, but man I am telling you it can be magic too if you see wiling to give and take. It can’t be your image alone though. Everyone needs to change. Or run down your joules, No one gives a shit.
