Don't ever give up!

Here is a picture of the first piece of pottery I ever bought. I remember it being very expensive compared to other potters pots. The cup is by Ed Drahanchuk who was a Alberta potter and was very prolific on the Canadian clay scene. His work was very recognizable because of the beautiful clay body, his dry ash glazes and the handsome wax resist decoration. I believe these two pieces are of prairie crocus. I still use the cup to this day even though it is cracked and chipped. It has a comfortable lip and takes me back to my youth and my early examination of pots.

A potters nightmare has it that he lost some fingers to a lawnmower which ended the clay career. But if you are an artist you find another way to express yourself. He moved to the west coast of British Columbia and started painting. His paintings are very beautiful. So the lesson is to never give up.

The jug is rather dated in the shape and handle placement but it still stands out with an identity that could be seen across the room. The jug is dated 1976 which is the year I went to The Banff School of Fine Arts and had the wonderful good luck to have F. Carleton Ball as my instructor. Carleton had the cabin next door so we swapped dinner invites. He was an amazing cook. He was also very encouraging of us young upstarts. Linda Christianson was the tech for the program and it where we first became friends. Amazing some 44 years ago.  Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

Ed had a serious hunting incident.
Was it a lawn mower or a hunting accident that got those fingers?

Is there more to this story?

More contributions are certainly needed.

Did Ed Drahanchuk ever make his last stab into pottery on Quadra Island?

Is it an Art School or a Conference Centre?

Does the name change give a clue Banff School of Art vs. Banff Centre?

Banff Centre is an arts organization; it was never meant to be a luxury mountainside conference centre.

Wouldn't be the first times that suits have hijacked an art education centre to turn it into a business.

Wouldn't be the first time the suits have killed the arts..
Looked what happened at Capilano University about 7 years ago, when university president Kris Bulcroft went to China and Korea recruiting more international students. She needed to build a new student residence and dormitory to house them, guess where she decided to build it. Well she cancelled all the studio art programs including their ceramics program, so she could tear down the Studio Art building for space to build her new international students residence. Money talks and art programs walk.

That cup is a beauty, does look like she could use some TLC.

You've amassed an amazing collection of pottery and ceramics, where will the collection be housed when you go to Care Bear Heaven?

Is that one of his paintings? What a great expression of that sentiment. Hopefully things in this crazy world will change soon, and Covid and the WH residents will magically disappear.

Now I know why old people flee Ontario for a couple of weeks in July and August, or permanently. It's the hot and humid weather. Then you really get the meaning of, but it's a dry heat here. We don't get the hurricanes from the east coast, but we get the left over hot steamy air that's pushed up. Where are you going to go retire to?
