Drink me pretty!

Usually when pots hang around and hang around I sell em off cheap. I'm not known much as a vase maker but here are a couple I made and they have grown on me. At first they were glazed in a shino firing that is what was what I call " walrus snot shino". It is when the shino gets this green look to the carbon trapping. I surmised it was from too early reduction. I really liked the pots in spite of the snot surface. I visited Bruce Cochrane and he put me on to buying a sand blaster from Princess Auto. I sandblasted the pots to take the shine off them. What I learned from that exercise is that shine doesn't do the form any justice. You want to show off form do matte. These two pots have been in galleries and exhibitions and always get returned unsold. It makes me scratch my bald head but I am never disappointed to see them return to papa. People like pretty. I don't do pretty. I really try to do beautiful. Rocks, bark, ploughed fields, nature at it's wildest is my thing. I would however put a pretty flower in one of these beautiful strong quiet vases. The vase should support the pretty flower and not compete with it. Looking at pots is like the acquired taste of good bourbon/whiskey. When we are young we don't venture into the hard stuff. We start with beer, maybe move to wine but the taste of a good top shelf whiskey is far off in our life's journey. Today I am seeing so many what I call "first time buyers" pots. They haven't looked at, collected enough work to be sommeliers of clay. These two pots will probably end up in my estate auction. Some lucky bugger will have scored a couple of my best and maybe not know they were my best.

“nepo babies”, meaning public figures who are likely only successful due to their famous parents.

And nepo babies are plentiful in Canadian politics, where successful parents pave the way for their offspring to operate more easily. And make no mistake, these people are professional operators. To list only three current examples: Justin Trudeau, whose father, Pierre, was a Liberal prime minister; former MP Peter MacKay, whose father, Elmer, held numerous Conservative cabinet ministerial posts; and Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley whose father, Grant, held the same position. Then you could add Caroline Mulroney, Erin O’Toole and Doug Ford, and the list goes on.

Canadian governance has had enough recycled bloodlines. We need to refresh the landscape by finding new people to implement innovative solutions because nepo also stands for No Entitled Political Offspring.

When you send them to galleries and exhibitions what title do you give them?
I hope not "Untitled 1 & 2".
Give them a name that they won't ever come back unsold.

Chaser i think titles are pretentious. I won't go that route. Thanks though. T

Nice and gnarly, but still functional!

A good title :

will provide insight into your inspiration for the artwork
may help the artwork tell its story.
leaves room for the viewer to bring his or her own meaning and interpretation of the artwork.
will be memorable and catchy
will be original
will not be too cheesy

Why You Shouldn’t Name Your Work “Untitled”

A buyer wants to feel like that artwork they are about to purchase from you is one of your best ever – that it truly is one of your masterworks. They’re going to have a hard time believing that if you’ve called the piece “Untitled No. 427”.

So what about naming your work “untitled”. If you can’t come up with a suitable name is it okay to name it “Untitled”?

This can be a real deal stopper and a complete turn off to a potential customer. Viewers and potential buyers will have a hard time believing your work has value if your piece is simply called “Untitled”. Titles do matter to an art buyer!

Is it sad that the Royal Family — not just Harry and Meghan — are destroying the monarchy? Not really. They’ve all been busily dismantling their reputations for years, now, with an endless torrent of tawdry, seamy guck about extramarital affairs, sex scandals and racist attitudes.

One thing is for certain: It’s now completely obvious that Queen Elizabeth, God bless her, was the glue that held the whole royal shebang together. With her sad passing, her children and grandchildren — always easy to dislike — have become even more dislikable. They make the villains on Dallas or Yellowstone look like beatified saints.

garniture

: a set of decorative objects (such as vases, urns, or clocks)

: a set of decorative accessories, in particular vases:
"the mantlepiece garniture was a dominant focal point"

A garniture is a number or collection of any matching, but usually not identical, decorative objects intended to be displayed together.

Garnitures may contain pieces made together with a view to being used as a set, or may be "assembled" by the decorator from pieces of different origin.

Most commonly a garniture is a collection of three or five matching pieces. Often a large central piece is flanked by pairs of smaller ones.

These two vases are just lonely, they need some friends.
Make them some display friends.

Kurokawa transforms amorphous hunks of clay into organic sculptures that bow and bend. The malleable material stretches to reveal pockets of negative space or to generate undulating edges, and once fired, the works appear to freeze those movements.

I check in on your blog occasionally. I don't think I've ever commented. I really like those pots and the surface. One of my favorite pots I paid too little for at a friend's sale at his studio. It's a beautiful oval glazed with a matte blue under metallic grey netting. (I didn't work in clay then. I still marvel at the effect despite years of studying glazes now.) I didn't have much money but he told me that didn't matter; no one wanted it so he was glad to pass it to someone who loves it. Don't be like my friend (as grateful as I am for having it these past forty years). Hold on to those beauties until a worthwhile owner recognizes their worth, begging you to take their money.

And yes, posting under anonymous, but I'll sign off as Naomi - and only I need a name, not my pieces.

Have you ever considered submerging the in water, so they become encrusted with marine life, coral or shells covering them would be most interesting?
