Just one new thing

I've always maintained that if you go to a conference and you come home with just one new thing it has been a total success. Funny thing is that sometimes people opt out of one of my workshops because they see me as a "wood fire potter"! This is simply not true as my workshops rarely talk about wood fire and in real life I have made my real living from gas firing. I talk about why and not so much how to .The North Carolina Wood fire Conference is coming up in Star, NC. Oh, I fire in electric oxidation why should I go? I really don't get that logic. I go to workshops on e-ware, photo transfers and all kinds of things- why because I just might learn just one new thing. At the conference it is my great pleasure to be presenting the wood fired work of my buddy Ronnie the Rat. Ron is best known for his painterly animated critters in e-ware. I am showing his darker and least known side. You should be at the conference. Word is I am sharing digs with 3 Zulu potters from Africa. How cool is that? That's why you go to conferences. You meet people from different cultures, that talk a different talk and man I find that so exciting. There will be potters from Africa, Japan, France, Switzerland, Gawd name it. Even if ya can't come support the clay cause and get one of Ronnie the Rats t-shirts or one of his books "The Potter's Menagerie". Oh hell I forgot I curated a cup show "The Curated Cup". It is about 3 cups you should have in your collection. They are also available. Available at Starworks- Ronnie the Rat, Linda Christianson, Eric Bobyl. There is a signed box and a statement by the curator (moi) why you should have these cups in your collection. Never stop learning at least just one more thing!

Benefits of Learning Something New
There are a lot of good, practical reasons to make learning something new every day your habit, but the best reason has nothing to do with practicality — we are learning creatures, and the lifelong practice of learning is what makes us humans and our lives worthwhile.

POTTERY - COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION & COMPLEX HANDLES
Course Code: ARTS2456

This course is not suitable for beginners.
With a focus on larger than life utilitarian pottery for occasional use, attention will be directed toward details on large casseroles, pitchers, bowls, baskets, and plates so they may be used for celebration and presentation. Sectional or composite construction, where many thrown and hand-built pieces are added together to form one vessel, and complex handle forming methods will be explored. Time will allow for assembly as well as surface decoration. Expect to be making work at least two to three times larger than most standard sized utilitarian pieces. Maker's marks and details of process will be the hallmark of finished work. Process-oriented, this course is about making thrown work bigger and better. Work will be bisque fired only.
