HOSPITALITY

Hospitality is when you welcome a stranger. I know of no other place like this place. I doubt a door is locked on the entire island and most people leave their keys in the ignition of their vehicles. Where would you go with a stolen vehicle except to the line up at the ferry? This evening I went to a Q and A and musical performance by the writers of Come from Away the smash musical that is now being performed all over the world. It is about the kindness shown to American Airlines passengers that were stranded in Gander, Nfld because of 911. The theme of the play is not the tragic event but about kindness. The kindness of the Newfoundland people. The kindness that the people of the world need to show one another. The question I will be asking myself after a month with my generous friends Lee and Fraser is how Fogo has changed me. I drove to the musical event from Joe Batt's Arm to the town of Fogo a half hour away and was in awe of the landscape, the sea scape and the barren beauty of this god forsaken windy rock. During the Q and A there were so many testimonials of the pride of giving, humanity, and kindness. There were no angry voices, no conspiracies, no hatred just common decency.Pride in being kind- whodda thunk it? Why did the Canadian cross the road? To get to the middle. Plane and simple let's meet in the middle. We are different to be sure. We expect others to have this quality or that quality instead of celebrating the qualities each other have. I received a lovely note today from a blog reader. He said I inspired him and brought up a quote from a post long ago. If you're not working on your dream, someone will hire you to work on theirs!

Fogo appears to have unique, austere beauty of its own.
Thanks for the posts. Always enjoy seeing the area that you are working in.
How much are you influenced by the place you are teaching/creating in?

Life is a picnic? No, life is not a picnic. A picnic in life would be more accurate: bugs in your coffee, damp seat and a glorious view.
