Dear Lord


What have I done? We have had a series of Intro throwing classes at Pinecroft. They are Saturday sessions where they start from scratch and try to end up with 3 thrown pieces. This morning one of my ladies just had a manicure and was laden with jewellery.  Rubber gloves were part of the equation. At this stage of my career surely I should teach someone that is willing to hawk the rings, buy a wheel and be willing to break a nail. Lord what can I do to reinvent myself??? I'll be good, I promise!

I once had a student who wore pink dishwashing gloves and would only take the class if I agreed to give no negative comment whatsoever to her about her work. They were desperate times...

haha I love the pictures. Every clay teacher has had that student, or worked with that lady in the studio-- the one who gobs on wax resist and cannot put enough glaze on her work.

Probably, Kid gloves, would work better than rubber or plastic.

Oh, yes, I have one that throws in gloves and makes real pots that way. It's fascinating to watch.
I have not had teal nails in 35 years, but who cares.
These are desperate times indeed. I hope she gets that dinnerware set done. ;)!

We shouldn't judge a student by their nails. Those hands looked like the hands of someone who had life experience and if we are in positions of adding to that experience we do what we can to make it possible. They came to learn. If we can make it happen we have enriched the life. I'd be willing to bet the hair was coiffed and the clothes coordinated. The important factor, not yet mentioned, "Was the mind open?"

The only time I had a student wear gloves was the one who was allergic to something in the clay. She wore surgical gloves and did quite well. What used to get me were the women with long nails who couldn't understand why their pots kept getting slashed up!
I guess it's a case of whatever floats your boat!

I have some very sore thumbs with deep cracks from working with clay. It always seems to be seasonal and with the heat system on and 100% zero moisture in the air, drying everything super fast. I think I could use a pair of kid gloves like throwing with a chamois leather.

in my Ceramics 101 class, a million years ago, there was another student who had 6"+ long fingernails that curled around... I have no idea what she thought she was going to accomplish. She dropped the class within a couple of days of the start.

It IS amazing what can be done with skin tight surgical gloves. I had to use them when I had a deep cut on an index finger. I couldn't tell the pots done with and without gloves apart. Loose ones, not so much.

She doesn't have that commitment to clay yet. After a few more lessons and those gloves will come off. I polish my nails all the time, it doesn't last long, but hey, a girls gotta do, what a girls gotta do.

Well, I've got to tell you this- One time a woman came by my booth and was very excited about a clay class (wheel throwing)she had taken recently. Then she showed me her hands. They were horribly raw. Parts were bandaged with blood showing through. She wanted to know how she could work differently to prevent more damage. I had to tell her I'd never seen anybody with damage like that from working on the wheel. I asked her some questions to try to figure out what she was doing to get so messed up. Finally she said that she was immune compromised- Lyme disease. Oh boy. I explained that clay was not exactly bacteria-free. I wish I had thought to recommend gloves to her.

I have nails that grow very fast and long ago I was a hand model.... I remember my very first pottery class with my long nails and the clippers that came out as soon as I got home. It was sad to cut them and they haven't been clean or long since that day:-)
